Counter-UAS for critical infrastructure vs. military-grade systems

Most of the counter-UAS technology on the market today was designed for a battlefield problem: detecting and defeating hostile drones in a contested, high-threat environment, often as part of a broader defense program. That's a real and difficult problem, and the systems built to solve it are genuinely capable.

It's also, for most critical infrastructure operators, the wrong problem. A security director at an energy substation, a stadium, or a corporate campus isn't trying to defend against a coordinated swarm attack. They're trying to answer a much simpler question: what's flying over my site, and should I care?

That distinction matters more than it might seem. Military-grade systems are built around assumptions that don't hold for a single-site security team — classified or classified-adjacent architecture, integration with broader command-and-control systems, and a procurement process that assumes a program office with a multi-year budget cycle and dedicated technical staff to operate it.

None of that is available to, or needed by, most critical infrastructure sites. A security team responsible for one facility needs a system that's sized for one facility: something that fuses the sensors already on-site, flags what's actually worth attention, and gets a small team to a defensible answer quickly. Not a command center. Not a classified program. A tool that fits the job.

The gap this leaves is real. Operators who need airspace visibility but don't have a defense budget or a program office have historically had two options: buy a scaled-down version of a military system (expensive, slow to procure, and still built around the wrong assumptions), or do without and hope nothing happens.

Synapse exists to be a third option — software-only, sensor-agnostic, and built specifically for the security team responsible for one site's airspace, not a defense program managing many. That means no jamming or interception hardware, no classified infrastructure requirement, and a deployment timeline measured in weeks rather than the multi-quarter cycle a defense procurement usually requires.

But if you're a security director who needs a real, continuous answer to what's in your airspace, and you're evaluating vendors built for a different mission entirely, it's worth asking whether the tool in front of you was actually built for your job.
